Science Questions:

The workshop will focus on unresolved problems related to the effects of ion composition in the Sun-Earth system.  Example discussion topics are detailed below:

    1. Sources of ions in the magnetosphere: Ionosphere and Solar-Wind
    2. How do composition and mass density affect magnetic reconnection?
    3. How does the ion composition affect waves in the magnetosphere?
    4. Light ions and heavy ions: What new observations are needed?
    5. What does ion composition tell us about the origin and evolution of the solar wind?
    6. How do the oxygen torus and cloak form and evolve?
    7. What role do heavy ions
(e.g. O+, N+, N2+) play in magnetospheric dynamics?
    8. Ion acceleration mechanisms in the topside ionosphere: How is the upflow converted to outflow?
    9. How do storm-changes in the thermosphere affect composition in the ionosphere/magnetosphere?
 
Venue and Accommodation:

The workshop will be held at Fort Lewis College, Durango, USA.  Durango is a historic mining town, situated on the Animas River  in the Rocky Mountains (~6500').  While the mining may have ended, the town is now primarily a tourist destination in the summer time, and retains much of its historic charm. There is a wealth of bars, restaurants and shops within the compact downtown area.  Numerous hiking trails and bike-paths surround the town.  

Fort Lewis College is within walking distance of the historic centre of Durango.  The walk covers 529 steps (The Sky Steps) and ~250 vertical feet.  Walking (uphill) from downtown to the meeting venue takes ~20 minutes.  If you are feeling more relaxed, there is also ample free parking available at Fort Lewis College.

Accommodation in and around Durango is plentiful, with numerous traditional hotels, apartments, and Bed&Breakfast accommodation available.  Some downtown options are:

There are many other options close to the town centre.

Please contact hotels in Durango directly to book your accommodation.   We strongly suggest that you make an early reservation as accommodation in the centre of Durango does get quite full during the summer months.

NOTE: There are a limited number of low-cost student suite-type rooms (single and double) available in the Bader Building  at Fort Lewis College itself - three rooms in a suite - shared bathroomOnly ICSES folks will have access to these rooms during the meeting.  

Cost will be $29 per night (+$10 booking fee).  Rooms must be booked directly by contacting Greg Weiss at (970)-247-7372.

Workshop Structure:

The workshop will take the form of morning and evening sessions with ample time for short presentations and extensive workshop-style discussion.

Of course, if you have lots more to say, we encourage you to do bring your other contributions to the discussion sessions!!!

The registration fee includes conference pack, icebreaker, conference banquet, AM/PM refreshments, and an excursion on the Durango & Silverton Steam Train.

Local Transport:

Durango is usually reached via road or air.  Direct flights to Durango depart from Denver, Phoenix, or Dallas, (via American Airlines and United Airlines).  International flights connect via these hubs.  The link to Durango airport on the City of Durango website is here.  

Durango can also be reached by car. Travel times by road to Durango are ~3.5 hours from Albuquerque, NM, ~6.5 hours from Denver, CO, and ~7 hours from Phoenix, AZ.
